Automating Ballast Procedure generation

Industry: Maritime & Offshore

Tech Stack: Python & React

Context and challenge

Allseas, a front-runner in the maritime construction industry, faced significant challenges with its continuous changes within their ballast procedure. The previously required engineers to manually calculate the optimal distribution of water across tanks for each stage of a lift operation, for example.

This manual process was labor-intensive therefore also prone to errors, affecting operational efficiency and the ability to maintain precise control over complex maritime projects.

Solution delivered by Yabba Data Doo

Yabba Data Doo developed a comprehensive dual-component software solution to upgrade Allseas’ ballast procedure calculations. The backend component is an automated procedure that optimizes the adjustment of water levels across tanks, ensuring smooth transitions between operational stages.

The front-end component provides a user-friendly interface that enhances monitoring and control, presenting the procedures ready for reporting clear visuals.

Application  and  functionality

The newly developed application automates the determination of the configuration of valves and pump settings to achieve the desired water levels. This allows for real-time adjustments needed when water levels differ from pre-set water calculations. It also supports real-time monitoring and control, allowing operators to manage the ballast procedure more effectively.

Approach  and  execution

The project was led by a dedicated developer and a project manager from Yabba Data Doo, who worked closely with Allseas' engineering team. The development process was structured into four sprints, allowing for flexible and regular adjustments. Bi-weekly onsite at their office and weekly discussion sessions ensured that the development stayed aligned with Allseas’ needs and that any arising issues were quickly dealt with.

value

The new system brought about a transformation in operational, automating the calculations and system configurations noticeably reduced the potential for human error. Furthermore, with the automation of routine tasks, engineers are now able to focus on more strategic aspects of projects, upgrading productivity and overall operational capability.

This transformation exemplifies how Yabba Data Doo's solution not only modernized a critical aspect of Allseas' operations but also created a new benchmark in efficient and error-free ballast procedure calculations.
